I am just trying to gear up for this transition.

I have performed dozens of customizations to ST 2.6.1. Just so I'm clear.... I looked under the release notes and found the following list of files. On upgrading, these are the only files that will get changed by upgrading to ST 2.7?

  • /admin/functions.php
  • /admin/home.php
  • /lang/standardtheme2.mo
  • /lang/standardtheme2.po
  • /lib/followcount.php
  • /lib/socialnetworking-webkit.php
  • /lib/socialnetworking.php
  • /lib/standardtheme.php
  • /theme-options/ads-125x125_8.php
  • /theme-options/ads-300x250_9.php
  • /theme-options/ads-468x60_10.php
  • /theme-options/author-box-settings_5.php
  • /theme-options/comment-options_6.php
  • /theme-options/framework-options_2.php
  • /theme-options/general-settings_1.php
  • /theme-options/sharing-options_7.php
  • /theme-options/theme-updates_13.php - REMOVE THIS
  • /comments.php
  • /header.php
  • /loop-aside.php
  • /loop-image.php
  • /loop-link.php
  • /loop-quote.php
  • /loop-video.php
  • /seotitles.php
  • /style.css
So, for example, if I made changes to archives.php, the changes will not get overwritten?

Let me rephrase my question.....

I see that ST 2.7 has all the files necessary for a full install. If I only upload the files above over my previously existing Standard Theme 2.6.1 install, will that effectively upgrade me to ST 2.7?

Technically this should work, but I'm going to give you a list of bullet points...

  • If you've heavily customized your site, I highly doubt that you didn't touch the standardtheme.php file and thats where most of the 2.7.0 changes took place. Replacing it, or any other file you've modified, would kill any of your changes.
  • While technically possible, this method has not been tested and is not supported. If you try this, you do so at your own risk. It would be wise to back everything up before you try. Upgrading Standard Theme, for now, is only recommended in this manor.
  • Unless there are some strongly compelling features in the release notes of things you need to have, then I'd suggest waiting until Standard Theme 3.0 officially drops. If you're going to put work into updating your site, you might as well wait for the big one.

Good luck!

Michael,

Yes, I made substantial changes to standardtheme.php, and several other files listed above. I have been keeping a changelog.txt, but still...

It looks like some of my changes are no longer necessary considering the updates you have made to 2.7.

I think I will take your sage advice, and just wait for 3.0 to release, then tackle the transition then.

Thanks!

I'va also made a significant amount of modifications to my theme... and I'm still running 2.0. I think I want to wait for 3.0 to come out before putting the hours in to overhaul my child theme to work with a newer version of Standard. Any guestimate to when 3.0 will be available? Next 3 months, next 6 months, longer?

Nevermind, I should have read a little more before asking about 3.0!

it's necessary to upgrade to 2.7?

@tengku, it's not necessary, but it does have a lot of improvements in there. If you have done a lot of customizations, you may need to be careful, but if you haven't, the upgrade should be pretty straightforward.
